Cascara (Rhamnus Purshiana) is a large shrub or small tree 4.5–10 m tall, with a trunk 20–50 cm in diameter. It is a species of plant in the family Rhamnaceae. The bark is from brownish to silver gray color with light spots. The leaves are oval, 5-15 cm long and 2-5 cm wide. The flowers are small, have 5 yellow-green sepals. The flowering period is short, ends in the early summer. The fruits are berries with a diameter of 6-10 mm. At first, bright red, turn purple or black when ripe. There are 3 seeds inside the fruit.
